Chapter Twenty-Four

When Brian gets to the hospital he recognizes Stephen even thou they never met.

Brian - "Excuse me."

Stephen - "Yes, I'm him but I'm having a bit of a family crisis right now so do you mind."

Brian - "No that's not what I want. I'm Brian, and friend of Jessica's."

Stephen - "Oh shit I'm sorry. Come on she's upstairs with everyone else."

Brian - "How is your grandma doing?"

Stephen - "Not good. They've gotten some of the test back and now they think she had a small heart attack too. That combined with the stroke is what has her in the coma. She hasn't regained conscience yet. Jessica hasn't left her side since they put her in the room. She's more worried then our mom."

They walk in to the room. Goldie and Loren are sitting by the bed, Jess is standing looking out the window. Brian puts his finger to his lips so no one says anything. He wraps his arms around her and rests his head on her shoulder.

Brian - "Hey Shortie." She turns around and holds him tight. She buries her face into his chest and cries quietly. "Why don't we go for a little walk?" He takes her by the hand and finds a quiet corner. They sit down on a couch. "It's okay I'm here now."

Jess - "I'm sorry I'm being silly. I called you back to tell you, you didn't have to come but I was too late you had already left."

Brian - "You needed me I was coming no matter what you said." He wipes the tears off her face.

Jess - "This is going to sound so stupid but I did need you here. I needed you to hold me and tell me it's going to be okay."

Brian - "Come here." He pulls her into his lap. "It's going to be okay. She'll wake up soon."

Jess - "I really hope so."

Brian - "She will. Have you tried resting at all?"

Jess - "How come everyone keeps telling me to sleep? I'm not the one who fell."

Brian - "Cause you are under a lot of stress and sleeping might be good for you. Why don't you just close your eyes for a little bit."

Jess - "Every time I close my eyes I see her lying at the bottom of the stairs with blood all over the floor." She shivers a little.

Brian - "it's okay. I'm here now." He leans his head on top of hers. She closes her eyes and falls asleep leaning against him. He doesn't say anything; he just plays with her hair and rubs her back. After an hour Stephen comes and finds them.

Stephen - "There you guys are."

Brian - "Shh. She's sleeping."

Stephen - "Mom said that we should probably get her to go home."

Jess - "I'm not going home."

Brian - "When did you wake up?"

Jess - "Just now." She stretches and tries to get the kink out of her neck. "Thanks."

Brian - "Any time. They're right, let's get you home so you can rest."

Jess - "No. Mom might need me."

Stephen - "Dad's here. Go home."

Jess - "But..."

Stephen - "no buts, Brian's going to take you home."

Jess - "fine I'm out numbered. I'll gonna to check on Gram before we leave." They walk in Gram's room. "Where's Loren?"

Goldie - "She took your father get something to eat. Is this one of the young men I keep hearing so much about?"

Jess - "Yeah mom this is Brian, Brian this is my mom Goldie."

Brian - "Nice to meet you. I just wish it wasn't under these circumstances."

Goldie - "Don't we all. So are you going to go home now?"

Jess - "Yeah since you all are ganging up against me."

Goldie - "Good. See that she gets something to eat Brian."

Brian - "Yes mam."

Goldie - "Take care of her."

Brian - "I plan on it."

Stephen - "Mom I'm going to walk them out." she says fine. They run into Loren and Kurt on the way back. Loren sees Brian and hugs him.

Loren - "It's so good to see you."

Brian - "Nice seeing you too." Kurt is eyeing Brian up.

Jess - "Dad this is my friend Brian, Brian this is my dad Kurt."

Kurt - "You're that one from that group right. What are you doing here shouldn't you be on tour somewhere."

Jess - "Daddy! I called him and he came to see if I was alright."

Kurt - "She's fine."

Stephen - "Hey pop lighten up."

Kurt - "I'm going to check on your grandmother." He walks up the hall.

Stephen - "You'll have to forgive our dad he doesn't deal well with stress."

Jess - "I'm so sorry Brian."

Brian - "That's okay."

Loren - "Well I'm glad you're here. But next time tell Kevin."

Brian - "Was he mad."

Loren - "I don't think he was mad but I think he would have come with."

Brian - "Which would have made you happy right?"

Loren - "Well I wouldn't have minded seeing him. But you better get her home before she changes her mind."

Jess - "Wait how are we getting home? I came in the ambulance with Gram. My car's at her house."

Loren - "Here take mine. It's in section 3E."

Brian - "Thanks."
