I had just gotten out of the shower in
a hotel room in Florida. It was August how the hell was it still so humid.
I had just laid down on my bed and closed my eyes when the phone rang. Opening
one eye I glared at it and thought for half a second about ignoring it. But it
just kept ringing, so I reached over and picked it up.
Me – “Hello?”
Zayne – “Hey speed racer.”
I sit up – “Zayne, hey what’s
up? How’s the wedding coming together?”
Zayne – “It’s getting
there slowly. If I had know that there was this much involved to it, I would
have let her mother take over.”
Me – “No you wouldn’t.”
Zayne – “You’re right
I wouldn’t. So how’s it going kiddo, you race this weekend?”
Me – “Of course I did. Today was the last race, I did alright finished 5th.”
Zayne – “Have you won one yet?”
Me – “Not yet. I was close
today I actually lead for about 17 laps.”
Zayne – “Just give it time,
you’ll get one.”
Me – “I know and then in typical
girl fashion I probably will start bawling. So what’s up, why’d you
call.”
Zayne – “Well I’ve got
a bit of a situation that I need your help with. It seems that Xandy has not
return from visiting dad yet and Mooney is being impossible insisting that I go and collect her and bring her home.”
Me – “But with all the wedding
stuff you don’t have time.”
Zayne – “Exactly, so I was
hoping that if you had some time. I mean I know you just got done with the season and probably wanted to relax for a little
bit, but it was either you or I fear she’s going to call Deacon next.”
Me – “Well I was looking to
relax a little.”
Zayne – “I’ll buy your
ticket.”
Me – “Do you know where in
New Zealand they are, I can’t very well get off the plane and say excuse me but I’m looking for some hobbits,
they usually hang out with three humans, an elf and a dwarf.”
Zayne – “I can give you the
address where dad’s staying there.”
Me – “That will work.”
Zayne – “You are such an angel,
I’ll call you back with your flight info.”
Me – “Oh don’t worry
about buying me a ticket. Like I said I did need to relax and maybe a vacation
to Middle Earth is what I need.”
Zayne – “Are you sure?”
Me – “Positive, now you go
I’m sure Famke has some thing that you need to do. And don’t worry
I’ll bring her home.”
Zayne – “Thanks Syd, love you.”
Me – “Love you too.”
I hang up and lay back on my pillows. Yes going to New Zealand
is undoubtable a good idea. I was just going to head back to LA and relax there
catch some waves, soak in the tub at night, have Brendan over… No wait
I need to stop right there. I had other things to think about, as Deacon was
so nice to point out to me the night of CJ’s party.
I had just gotten off the stage, after
Tom had dragged me up to sing two songs with them. There was some music playing
and I was dancing with Brendan in a way that an older brother never likes to see, when Deacon appeared over Brendan’s
shoulder.
“Sydney,
may I speak with you?” he said in that voice that means do not argue with me.
“Sure. Excuse me for a second.” Deacon takes my hand and leads
me through the other dancing people to the side of the house where it’s a little more quiet. “Alright, what did I do now?”
“I was speaking
with Jill and she was telling me all about this new guy.”
“Yeah."
"What are you doing?
How many times do we have to go through this Syd? You have asked me to make sure that you don't get distracted from
your racing career."
"How is dancing with
a guy going to distract me from my career?"
"Sydney, we both know
your history with guys. You are all in love with them for awhile and then they start trying to take over and I'm the
one that has to get rid of them before you completely lose yourself." I look at my shoes, admiting defeat. "Honey
look, you're right there is no harm in dancing, but don't let it go any further okay."
"Okay."
***************
These were
still my thoughts as I got off the plane. I had Uncle Viggo's address in one hand and my carry on in the other.
I had only checked one bag because I wasn't planning on staying very long, a week at the most. I hailed a taxi and heading
in to the main part of town.
Surprisingly
enough, Wade enterprises didn't have any hotels in this part of the world. Something I was going to tell Daddy he had
to fix, so I was going to check in to a little hotel since I didn't want to impose on anyone while I was staying. The
clerk was checking on my room when I heard some one behind me.
"Oh my god, you're
Sydney Wade."
I turn to find a very
charming blue eyes looking into mine.
