Winter Semester 1998
The alarm went off and Ally rolled over to turn it off. She opened her eyes and look at the glaring red numbers. She sat up and threw her pillow across the room to where her roommate Amanda was asleep.
Ally - "Mandy. The alarm went off already get up."
Mandy mumbles something in to her pillow. Ally already has her robe and is getting her bathroom caddy.
Ally - "come on before the showers are all taken."
Mandy - "Fine I'm up." She gets out of bed and puts her slippers on.
By the time she got to the girls' bath on their floor Ally was already in one of the three showers. Mandy looked in to the mirror and almost didn't recognize her reflection. "I've got to stop staying out so late."
Ally - "Did you say something?"
Mandy - "No I'm just hating myself this morning."
Ally - "Well hop in the shower that might help wake you up." Amanda gets in the far shower stall and turns on the hot water as far as it goes. Soon the whole room is full of steam. She lets the hot water work it's magic on her tired muscles and soon she is feeling more like herself. She gets out and wraps a towel around her hair and slips one around her body. "Feel better."
Mandy - "Yes very much." Ally is brushing her teeth. And trying to talk around the foam in her mouth. "That's gross."
She rinses out her mouth. "What time did you get in last night?"
Mandy - "Around three I think." She runs a comb through her long hair. "I know save the sermon. I'm here for school not for partying."
Ally - "I just worry about you. I mean you left the party kind of early with that guy then you got in so late. You don't know him that well."
Mandy - "Well I'm not going to be getting to know him any better that's for sure. The guy was a total sleaze." Some of the other girls that live on their floor come in to the bathroom.
Ally - "Well I'm going to go back and check my mail before class."
Mandy - "Be there in a minute." Mary the floor's biggest bitch goes to turn the shower on.
Mary - "Do the two of you always have to use all the hot water?"
Mandy - "that's the advantage of getting up early."
Mary - "Or maybe you just never went to sleep. I can't wait for you two to flunk out of school."
Mandy - "Well good morning to you too." She picks up her things and goes back to the dorm room that they share. "God I really hate that girl."
Ally - "who now?"
Mandy - "Mary Katherine White." She mimics the other girl's voice. "Stuck up snot." Ally laughs.
Ally - "Hey I got some mail from my brother."
Mandy - "Which one?"
Ally - "I've only got one brother."
Mandy - "What's his name again?"
Ally - "Play it cool all you want I know you've got a crush on him."
Mandy - "I don't know what you are talking about." She puts her sweater on. "How cold is it supposed to be today?"
Ally - "We might get flurries later this afternoon. Oh my God!"
Mandy - "What?" She leans over her shoulder.
Ally - "He's coming to visit."
Mandy - "Really when?"
Ally - "The end of next week. He told me to keep Friday night open he wants to take me out for my birthday."
Mandy - "you're birthday was like a month ago."
Ally - "I know but he couldn't get in town for it. Want to come?"
Mandy - "Sure I don't have any plans."
Ally - "Cool I'll e-mail him back and let him know."
Mandy - "Well be quick I'm hungry and its Wednesday that means the caf is serving French toast."
Ally - "Okay okay."
Alec,
Hey Friday sounds good. I can't wait to see you.
If it's alright I'm going to bring my room mate
Amanda with. She's a lot of fun you'll love her
I do. So what are we going to do? Let me know
I want to go buy a new outfit.
Love ya lots big brother.
Ally.
Friday Night.
Mandy - "So he just said we were going to a concert he didn't say who?"
Ally - "For the like fifteenth jillion time. No he didn't say who we were going to see."
Mandy - "Well there's no one good playing anywhere around here. God he's like not taking us to the opera or the symphony or something is he cause I'm not dressed for that." She gestures to the low hip hugging leather pants and shiny purple string back top.
Ally - "You know you're going to freeze."
Mandy - "I've got my jacket. Besides I want to look good in case there's any cute guys there."
Ally - "And what I don't." She's wearing a half length cameo skirt with a black sleeveless sweater. Both fit her curves very nicely.
Mandy - "No you look fabulous." The phone rings. "I'll get it."
Ally - "Of course you will." She finishes putting in her earrings.
Mandy - "Hello. Yeah we'll be right down." She hangs up. "That was your brother he's downstairs."
Ally - "Why didn't you invite him up?"
Mandy - "Cause I want to get going you can give him a tour of our little shit hole later. Let's go." Mandy grabs both of their jackets and pulls her friend out of the room.
When they get downstairs Ally sees her brother standing by a limo. She runs over, and almost slips on the ice.
Alec - "Geez Al, be careful."
Ally - "I missed you!" Mandy makes her way over more slowly because she is after all wearing heels. "Oh this is my roomie Amanda, but she goes by Mandy."
Alec - "Nice to meet you finally." He extends his hand to shake hers.
Mandy - "Nice to meet you too."
Alec - "Well ladies is you'll hop in we'll get this show on the road." He opens the door and the girls pile inside.
Ally - "Wow. Alec this is really nice but you didn't have to go to any trouble."
Alec - "Hey it's not everyday I get to take my little sister out for her big 21. So Mandy how old are you?"
Mandy - "Oh I'm still 20. My birthday's not until December."
Alec - "Well I'll just have to do this again then." He phone rings. "Excuse me for a second okay." He sits back against the far seat.
Mandy - "Why didn't you tell me your brother was loaded?"
Ally - "Well he's not really. He's a financial advisor."
Mandy - "Which is?"
Ally - "He manages other people's money and makes investments for them. He's really good, and then he takes a commission off the earnings."
Mandy - "Oh. So that's why he lives in LA."
Ally - "Kind of. I mean that's where the majority of his clients are."
Alec - "Okay hey man I'll just see you when we get there. Okay late." He hangs up. "Sorry about that."
Ally - "So where are we going?"
Alec - "You sure you want to know now. You wouldn't rather be surprised."
Ally - "No tell me now."
Alec - "We're going into Pittsburg."
Mandy - "Pittsburg."
Alec - "Yeah an old friend of mine is in a group that's playing there tonight."
Ally - "Brian. We're going to see Brian!"
Alec - "Yeap."
Ally - "Oh my God! When did you talk to him!"
Alec - "Well he and the other guys became clients of the firm I work for and we just litterly ran into each other at the office."
Ally - "Oh my God. So he remembered you."
Alec - "Ally. Of course he remembered me, he asked about you and mom and everyone."
Ally - "What did you tell him about me?"
Alec - "I told him that you were doing well that you were up at IUP in school and you had just turned 21 and he insisted that I bring you to their show in Pittsburg."
Ally - "He did." She can't help but smile when she thinks back to all the times when Brian would come over on have dinner at their little house.
Mandy - "Would someone mind filling me in on what's going on? Who are we going to see?"
Ally - "The Backstreet Boys."
Mandy - "Are you serious? You mean you've known a Backstreet Boy all this time and never told me."
Ally - "Well I didn't think anyone would believe me."
Mandy - "So instead you just let me sit there and talk about how cute they were and how sexy AJ was."
Ally - "Yeah sorry."
Mandy - "That's okay. We're going to the concert now so I forgive you. Are we going to get there in time?"
Alec - "Well we'll miss the opening act but we should get there by like eight and they go on at nine."
Mandy - "So do we have good seats?"
Alec - "Honey, we're going backstage." Before they can help it both girls scream.
