Chapter Fifty-eight

August 1999

Josh - "You're really coming out."

Summer smiles, " YES.. I really am.. "

Josh - "how did you talk the old man into letting you come all the way to LA by your lonesome?"

Summer - "Well, I won't exactly be by myself.  Ginger is coming with me."

Josh laughs - "Ok, her and who else?"

Summer - "Just her"

Josh - "Yeah right.  Dads sending Ginger with you is 10 times worse than you coming by yourself.  He knows shes a party girl."

Summer - "Well, she's changed, being with Danny has kinda mellowed her out."

Josh - "Or so she'd have you believe."

Summer - "No I am serious I think that maybe she has finally grown up."

Josh is silent.  Summer looks down to make sure she didn't accidentally disconnect him.

Summer - "Hello?"

Josh - "I'm still here.  Ginger settling down.  I'll believe it when I see it.  So when is your flight?"

Summer - "We fly out at noon next Friday.  We arrive at 6 our time or 3 your time."

Josh - "Cool.  Hey is it a big coincidence that AJ and the boys happen to be in town the one and only time you choose to come visit me at school."

Summer scoffs, "I am appalled you would even think such a thing.  Besides it is not my fault that you only came home for half the summer."

Josh chuckles - "That's what I thought, so can you pencil some time in your busy agenda to spend with me."

Summer - "But of course.  Oooh, I gotta go another call is coming in."

Josh - "Check the caller ID.  Is it important?"

She glances over and sees Nick's cell phone # and smiles.  "Yeah it's mommy."

Josh - "Ok brat.  Tell Nick hey from me."  He saw through her, but then he always could.  During the few weeks he was in Florida he had found out about Nick and then told Ginger.

Summer - "You know you still wouldnt know about him if you hadn't stolen my cell phone."

Josh - "Yeah I would you suck at keeping secrets.  But anyway, goodbye"

Summer - "You sound like that horrible chick from The Weakest Link.

Josh - "You are the weakest link.. goodbye"

She hangs up with him and connects with Nick..

Summer - "Hey Nicky"

Nick - "What are you wearing?"

Summer giggles - "You are such a dork"

Nick laughs - "I know.  But seriously what are you wearing?"

She looks down at herr paint-splattered cut offs and bandanna top.  "Um, nothing.  I am actually sun bathing in the nude."

Nick - "Really!!!"

She laughs - "No.  I am painting my room, but I think I am getting more paint on myself than on the walls."

Nick - "You're painting naked!!!!"

She cracks up and continues to do so for several seconds until she has to stop and catch her breath

Summer - "Oh my god, you are quite the obsessive compulsive aren't you.  I am wearing cut offs and a shirt.  So what are you wearing?"

Nick - "Shorts and flip flops"

Summer - "Um, so how is life in the mid-west?"

Nick - "We are currently in a town with exactly one hotel so everyone knows where we are staying and well to put it mildly they have the place surrounded."

Summer - "Well why are you so down.  This will give you time to brush up on counter attacks, so you can at least be somewhat of a challenge next time you play your little brother."

Nick - "It's a little broken."

Summer - "How can you break something a little?  It's either broken or it isn't."

Nick - "It's dead, might as well bury it."

Summer - "What did you do to it"

Nick - "I don't know it just won't work"

Summer - "Anyway, good news, I'm allowed to come to LA in two weeks"

Nick - "With a chaperone, of course"

Summer - "Of course, but it's my sister"

Nick - "Really.. from what AJ says, she doesn't sound like much of a chaperone"

Summer - "She's changed a little from what AJ remembers.  But she's still very... um,  liberal."

Nick - "Wait til I tell him she's coming"

Summer - "No don't.  If you want to see AJ loose his composure, let it be a surprise."

Nick laughs a wicked sort of laugh, "that would be interesting to watch."

Summer - "You have no idea"

The two continue to talk for a few more minutes and then he has to go.  Summer hangs up and contemplates her latest décor change.  Hugh knocks on the door and walks in.  He looks at the walls.  Summer shakes her head.

Hugh - "Whatever made you pick lemon-lime sorbert as the wall color?"

Summer - " PMS"

Hugh - "Well, I guess if you wanted to we could go pick another color."

Summer - "Really!"

Hugh smiles - "Absolutely, one should not be held accountable for any decorating decision made while under the influence of PMS, besides we can go get something for dinner and save me cooking."

She grins, "ok, let me go wash up."

He nods, " I'll be down stairs"
