Chapter Seventy-Seven

By 2:30 Summer still hadn't heard from Nick.  So she decided to just take a cab over to the Carter's and really give it to him for forgetting her.  The driver buzzed at the gate and Mrs Carter's voice came over the box.

Summer - "Mrs. Carter its me Summer.  Is Nick there?"

Jane - "Oh Summer.  Come on up to the house."  The driver goes around the bend and up to the house.

Summer pays the driver and then goes up the steps.  Jane is waiting at the door.  "Hi Mrs. Carter.  Guess Nick forgot me huh."

Jane - "Not exactly.  Come inside sweetie."  Right away Summer knows something's wrong.  Jane leads her into the living area off the foyer.  "Have a seat."

Summer - "What's wrong?  Is Nick hurt?"  She sits across from her.

Jane - "No but he probably will be.  He's not coming Summer."

Summer - "What do you mean he's not coming?"

Jane - "He called last night.  Evidently he's met some girl and decided to spend the holiday with her.  I thought the two of you had broken up."  Summer's heart felt like it broke in to a hundred pieces and fell into her shoes.  She couldn't move.  "I take it from you coming today that he didn't call you."  Summer shakes her head.  "I'm sorry Summer.  Do you need a drink or something?  We're having dinner in about half an hour you're welcoming to join us."

Summer - "No.  No thank you.  Can you call AJ for me, please?"

Jane - "Sure."

Jane calls AJ and tells him everything over the phone.  He did not take it well at all.

AJ - "He what!"

Jane - "Alex I'm just telling you what he said on the machine.  He didn't even have the courage to call and talk to us."

AJ - "That little shit.  Wait until I get a hold of him I swear.  I'm sorry Jane I know he's your son, but he's going to be in a lot of pain when I see him."

Jane - "I know Alex, but right now we have to think of a very upset young woman sitting in my living room."

AJ - "I know.  How is she?"

Jane - "She's ready to fall apart.  I think the only thing keeping her together is the fact that she's at a strangers house."

AJ - "I'm on my way to get her.  Its going to take me almost an hour to get there."

Jane - "Okay.  We'll see you then."  She hangs up and goes back to where Summer is.  "I called him.  He said he'll be here in an hour."

Summer - "Oh okay.  Um, I think I'm going to just going to take a cab back to AJ's.  I don't want to interrupt your dinner."

Jane - "You're not."

Summer - "Mrs. Carter, I'm not feeling so good all of a sudden and I think it would be best if I got out of here."

Jane - "Well let me drive you."

Summer - "I don't want you to go to any trouble."

Jane - "Its no trouble at all.  Let me get my keys and call AJ again."

She calls AJ again and then goes to find Bob and fill him in on what's going on.  When Aaron heard Summer was there he wanted to go see her but Jane didn't think it was a good idea.  She gets her keys and takes Summer home.

The ride was quiet for the most part.  Jane tried to keep Summer's mind off things by asking her about her family and school.  It work she was able to get Summer home with out a tear shed.

Summer - "Thank you for the ride Mrs. Carter."

Jane - "Summer, I am sorry.  I can tell you from our little drive here that my son is making a mistake.   You are a wonderful girl, and its his loss.  Don't waste too many tears on him."

Summer - "I'll try not to but, I did love him Mrs. Carter."

Jane - "He's hard not to.  You're going to be fine."  She leans over and hugs the young girl to her.  "You have my number?"  Summer nods.  "Call me sometime okay?"

Summer - "Okay."  Just then AJ pulls in the driveway.  He jumps out of the car as soon as the ignition's off.  Summer jumps out of Jane's car.  "Lexy."  She breaks down and starts sobbing.  Jane waves at AJ and backs out of the driveway.

AJ - "Come on Lily.  Lets get you inside."  He leads her inside and sits her on the couch.  "I'll be right back."  He leaves and she sits there crying uncontrollably.  AJ gets back and again takes her into his arms, he places a cool washrag on the back of her neck and tries to get her to calm down.

Summer - "I don't understand Alex.  Why didn't he say anything?  I just talked to him two days ago."

AJ - "I don't know.  Its okay, just calm down."  He rocks her back and forth.  "Its alright."

Summer - "No its not."  She cries for what seems like an hour.  AJ just sits there and listens to her mumbled sobs about Nick.

After shes quiet for a couple minutes AJ asks, "So you hungry?"

Summer - "Yeah actually I am."

AJ - "Want to go get a burger?"

Summer - "But its Thanksgiving."

AJ - "So who cares, I want a burger."

Summer - "Okay, let me go get cleaned up."

AJ - "Okay."  While she's upstairs AJ calls and leaves a message on Nick's voice mail.  "Hey man.  How's it going?  So you having fun whatever you're out doing?  Did you have fun breaking Lily's heart?  I swear whatever hole you and your slut have climb in you better stay there because when I get a hold of you...  You are going to shed as many tears as I just saw come out of her eyes.  You better not call me.  Ever."

Nick stood on the balcony looking out into the ocean.  He hadn't forgotten about Summer, he just didn't have the courage to call her.  His phone rang and he looked down and saw AJ's number.  He let it go to voice mail.

Willa - "Nick.  Hey what are you doing out here?"  She was wearing a skimpy bikini that showed off her body.

Nick - "Nothing.  Going down to the pool?"

Willa - "Yeah.  Care to join me?"

Nick - "I'll be down later."

Willa - "You know you're the one that insisted we come to California.  I was quite cozy at your house back in Florida.  And now you're acting like you don't want to be here."

Nick - "I do want to be here.  Go ahead down I'll get ready and be down in a couple minutes."

Willa - "Okay.  Whatever."  She leaves and he starts to change.

He notices all the marks on his chest.  Occasional she gets a little to rough when they where having sex and bites him too hard and would leave bruises.  He reached back in his suitcase for a shirt to wear and his fingers brush a picture.  He pulled out a picture of him and Summer.  He ran his finger over her face, trying to remember and forget at the same time the sound of her voice.  She had the smallest trace of an accent.  He loved the way she sounded early in the morning.

He closes his eyes and puts the picture back in the bottom of his bag.  He had made his decision.  Right or wrong he had to live with it.

The news spread through various ways until it reached everyone.  Then there were calls of congratulations to Loren and Kevin.  No one really knew what to say to Summer.  Jess called her as soon as she heard, and got her machine.

Jess - "Hey Sum.  It's Jessica you home."

Summer - "Hey Jess.  I'm here, just screening calls."

Jess never one to beat around the bush comes to the point.  "Has he called yet?"

Summer - "I think he called a couple times and hung up on my machine.  I really don't have anything to say to him."

Jess - "I'm really sorry.  I wish I had some explanation for his actions but I don't."

Summer - "You don't have to apologize for him."

Jess - "I know.  I just could really strangle him you know.  Well I guess I don't have to tell you that."

Summer - "No not really."

Jess - "How have you been?"

Summer - "Okay.  I mean, we weren't really together that long just a few months.  I'll get over him Jess."

Jess - "Will you call me if you need to talk?"

Summer - "Yeah.  Jess could you do me a favor?"

Jess - "Sure."

Summer - "He's probably going to call you before anyone else so can you tell him to not call me and just leave me alone.  It'll make my life a lot easier."

Jess - "You sure."

Summer - "Yeah."

Jess - "Okay hun.  I'll let you go."

Summer - "Okay.  Thanks."

The two girls hung up and Jess tried to call Nick.  Surprisingly a girl answered his phone.

Willa - "Look will you give it up already, he doesn't want you."

Jess - "Excuse me."

Willa - "Look Summer.  You're in college right, so you should be smart enough to figure it out.  He wanted a real woman."

Jess - "Hate to break it to you but I'm not Summer."

Willa - "Oh then who's this."

Jess hears Nick come in the background.  "Willa I told you not to answer my phone!"

Willa - "I was tired of it ringing."

Nick - "Hello."

Jess - "That's who you took off with!  You left Summer humiliated for Willa.  Oh Nick how could you?"

Nick - "Hi Jess."

Jess - "Don't hi Jess me.  Nick, what is going on?"

Nick - "Look I really don't have to explain myself to you."

Jess - "You broke her heart do you know that.  Why didn't you call her?  Did you know she went to your parents' house on Thanksgiving?"

Nick - "Yeah I got a message from my mom."

Jess - "Have you talked to anyone?"

Nick - "I'm talking to you."

Jess - "You have a lot of explaining to do."

Nick - "Jessica you're my friend, not my judge.  I can do what ever I want for what ever reason I want."

Jess - "But to choose Willa over Summer.  It doesn't make sense."

Nick - "It did to me.  Look I'm vacation, can we deal with this later."

Jess - "You better not make it too much later.  It will only get worse the longer you take.  One last thing, I talked to Summer.  She doesn't want you to call her.  Just leave her alone okay."

Nick - "Are you done?"

Jess - "Yes I'm done."

 Nick - "Good bye Jess."

Jess - "Good bye Nick."
