Chapter Sixty

Summer sits quietly in the car lost in her thoughts.  Bretts just driving.  He reaches over and turns on the radio.  I want it that way comes on he reaches over to change it.

Summer - "What are you doing?"

Brett - "Sorry Sum I just can't take it right now."

Summer - "You can't take it right now.  Why are you so upset?  Did your family just have a huge fight in public?"

Brett - "No."  He leaves the song on.

Summer - "Where are we going?"

Brett - "I thought we could just go to the cliffs for awhile."  She inwardly groans.

Summer - "I'm not really in the mood."  He pulls the car over.  "What are you doing?"

Brett - "Look I need to know what's going on?"

Summer - "Brett I've just had a bit of a bad night okay.  Going up to the cliffs and having sex in your backseat is not exactly appealing right now."

Brett - "Okay so what's your excuse for all the other times.  So we have conformation that your sister is a slut big deal."  She glares at him.

Summer - "She is not a slut."

Brett - "Delilah look at the facts okay.  She's had how many boyfriends?  Like five since we started seeing each other.  And now she's screwing around with some married guy.  He is married that means he loves his wife and he's just with her for the sex."

Summer - "Look you don't know anything about them.  If Danny was just in it for the sex then why does he stay at her house.  Why does he do all of those nice things for her?  Do you know that he made her a table to design at for her birthday.  If you're just with some one for sex you don't take the time to do something like that."

Brett - "Well what about his daughter?"

Summer - "I didn't know he had a daughter.  I mean I saw his tattoo but I just figured it was an old girlfriend or something.  But thats besides the point you have no right to judge my sister."

Brett - "I just call them like I see them."  She looks down at her lap.

Summer - "You are narrow minded aren't you."  He leans over and puts his arm behind her seat.

Brett - "Oh are we feeling feisty now."  She looks up at him.

Summer - "No Brett.  I'm down right pissed.  I have a little secret to tell you."

Brett - "I'm listening."

Summer - "I've been seeing some one else."

Brett - "What?  Who?"

Summer - "It doesn't matter who."

Brett - "Like hell it does.  I'm kicking his ass."

Summer - "Why I'm still leaving you for him."

Brett - "You're dumping me!"

Summer - "Yeah.  I wasn't sure for a long time who I wanted to be with but you really proved yourself to me tonight.  It wasn't just what you said about my sister that by itself is bad enough but the whole time everything was going on.  I just wanted you to reach over and take my hand.  But it seems that the only time you touch me is when you want something in return and I'm sick of being used like that.  We've grown apart."

Brett - "Then why did you defend me to Danny."

Summer - "I might not be in love with you anymore but I don't want you dead.  Look can you just take me home."

Brett - "No, since youre so grown find your own way home."

Summer - "What?"

Brett - "I said get your filthy cheating whore ass out of my car."  From the look in to his eyes she can tell if she doesn't he will physically remove her.  She gets out.  "Oh and just so you know.  I have been seeing other people too.  I mean you never have really been enough for me but you sure did look good to my parents."  With that he drives away.  Summer looks around.  He had dropped her by the mall.  Its just closing so she walks over and gets a cab home.

Summer opens the door.  Her mom and dad are still up, they are in the family room.

Juliana - "Delilah, is that you honey?"

Summer - "Yeah mom."  She walks in the room.  Juliana is sitting on one end of the couch with Hughs head in her lap.  He has a cold washcloth over his eyes and she is rubbing his temples trying to get his head ache to go away.

Juliana - "How was your night?"

Summer - "Um okay."  Hugh takes the washcloth off his eyes and looks at her.

Hugh - "What happened?"

Summer - "Well Brett and I kind of broke up.  But its a good thing I'm not upset by it."

Hugh - "What happened?"

Summer - "Well we just talked and realized we wanted different things.  Basically he wanted to see other people and I thought it might be a good idea."  Okay so she lied but she knew he couldn't take the truth.

Juliana - "Are you sure youre okay honey?"

Summer - "Yeah I'm fine.  Just kinda wiped I think I'm going to go to bed.  I have to start packing for my trip tomorrow.  Good night."  She kisses them both on the cheek and goes up to her room.

Hugh - "I'm beginning to question her going to California with her sister."

Juliana - "Oh no don't you dare.  She has been looking forward to visiting Josh for a month.  And no matter how questionable you might think Thalia and Josh's character is you know they would die before they let something bad happen to Delilah."

Hugh - "Yes that is about the only thing I know about them anymore.  When did I lose them Julianna?  How did I let them get so distant."

She kisses his forehead, "you just loved them the only way you knew how honey.  They'll see that one day."  She plays with his damp hair.  "Come on we've both had an exhausting night lets go to bed and think about this in the morning."

Hugh - "Okay.  Go ahead I'll lock up."  Juliana heads up while he checks all the doors.  As she passes Summers room, she knocks.

Summer - "Come in."  She's sitting at her vanity brushing her hair.

Juliana - "I just want to make sure you're okay."

Summer - "Yeah mom I'm fine really.  Its actually a bit of a relief.  I never realized how tiring it was being the star jocks girlfriend.  I can actually go to school now with out feeling like everyone is analyzing every move I make.  I feel like I've been holding my breath since my junior year of high school and I can just now let it out."  She sets the brush down.

Juliana - "Here I'll braid it."  She takes the elastic Summer was holding a puts her hair in a loose braid.  "Well just because I found my love in high school doesn't mean that you had to.  You're still young go have fun, just not too much.  Your dad can't take it if you go all wild on him too."

Summer - "I know.  Mom, you know Danny does really love her.  And she loves him too.  I hope they can get this all sorted out."  She puts her face down next to her daughters and looks at her in the reflection.

Juliana - "Me too."  She kisses her cheek.  "Do not get any older.  I need my little baby girl."

Summer - "Good night mom."

Juliana - "Good night honey."
