There's something about those boybands.
Chapter Eighty Seven

Jess had found a house, but it was the whole way out in Malibu.  So given her present condition she let Stephen and Reece talk her into staying with them.  Her mom had taken up residence at the hotel across from the hospital so she could get there in under a minute. Kurt unfortunately was on a shoot that he couldn’t get out of. It was still like a month until her due date but the doctor had put Jess on bed rest, which was slowly making her and those around her crazy. What was even worse was everyone commenting on how big she was.  Jessica was always a petite person so not being able to see her feet was very disconcerting to her.

What was worse is that she started comparing her life to the Jerry Springer shows that she had developed a weird fascination for. Knowing that Brian and company were all in LA getting ready for his wedding to Christine was not helping matters.  She didn’t leave the house for fear that some one would see her.

So this morning she was in her normal spot by ten eating a bagel and watching Jerry up in her room. Oliver was about five months old. Reece would sit him on the bed with Jess and they’d watch the show together. She had just brought him in when Jess felt a sharp pain in her back.

Me - “Ouch!”

Reece - “I’m sorry did he kick you again?”

Me - “No. Ooooouuuuch! It’s just my back.”

Reece - “What’s wrong?”

Me - “It really hurts.”

Reece - “Um okay. Now we can be calm.” She’s Jess’s labor coach. “Okay what did Dana say? Okay get up I’m putting you in the shower.”

Me - “Okay.” She helps her out of bed and turns on the water.

Reece - “Okay you get in and let the water beat on your back if the pain starts to go away then it’s not labor if it doesn’t...”

Me - “If it doesn’t I think we’re going to the hospital.”

Reece - “I’m going to go call Stephen.” She takes Ollie and leaves.

Jess gets in the shower and holds on to the bar they put in it for Grammie Shirley. The pain doesn’t go away it gets worse. She kneels down in the tub and turns the water off. Reece comes back in. “Oh my god! Are you alright? Did you fall?”

Me - “No. I think I should go to the hospital.”

Reece - “okay Stephen’s on his way. Let’s get you dressed.”

He gets there just as Reece is putting on Jessica’s flip-flops because nothing else has fit for months.

Stephen - “So are we having a baby today?” Jess’s back is killing her and she can barely walk upright.

Me - “Just get me to the car and then I’ll yell at you.”

On the way Reece calls Loren. She was out doing some last minute wedding things with Christine so she is more then willing to escape.  After making some weak excuse she leaves her with the florist. Everyone gets to the hospital and Goldie is waiting down at the entrance with a wheelchair.

Goldie -“okay come on I’ve got someone at the elevator.”

Me - “Mom labor can take hours.”

Goldie - “Well let’s just hurry in case it doesn’t.”

Me - “Did you call daddy?”

Goldie - “yes he’s got the next flight in.”

Me - “good.” The pain flares up again and she winces.  Once they get upstairs they take Jess into triage and start getting vitals.  She had been in before with a false alarm and the nurses have a note on her chart saying to not try to make people leave the room cause it’s more hassle then it’s worth.  The OBGYN Dr. Kelley comes in and looks over the chart. He has a frown in his face.

Goldie - “what’s wrong?”

Dr. K - “She has a fever. It’s probably nothing. Here let me check you quick?” Stephen gets little white.

Stephen - “I’ll wait outside.”

Me - “good idea.”

Dr. K - “You’re not dilated at all. I don’t like that fever though I’m going to move you to a private room where we can watch you more closely.”

Me - “Okay.”  Loren comes in right then all out of breath.

Loren - “Alright you can have the baby now I’m here.”

Me - “oh okay that’s all I was waiting for.”

Loren - “I know.”

Me - “So what where you doing?”

Loren - “you really don’t want to know.” In code that means Brian’s wedding stuff.

Me - “Oh okay.  Oh did some one call Vivian.”   Vivian had been a life saver for Jessica.  They had went to college together but lost touch after graduation.  When Jessica moved back to LA she ran into Vivian at dinner one night and it was like they were never apart.

Reece – “I forgot I’ll call her now.”  Loren’s phone rings.

Loren - “Excuse me.”  She walks out in to the hall. “Hello?”

Kevin - “Hey where are you at?”

Loren - “Up town why what’s up?”

Kevin - “Did you forget about the rehearsal?”

Loren - “I’m sorry I had to come get that thing I’m getting for Christine.”

Kevin - “Well when are you getting back?”

Loren - “What Kevin I’m starting to lose my connection I think my battery’s about to die. Kev…”  She hangs up the phone and turns it off. Loren sighs to herself and puts it back in her purse, and see a picture of him “It’ll be over soon then I’ll make it up to you I promise.”

They take Jess to a private room and everyone is huddled inside of it. For the next two hours they do all kinds of test and the backache just gets worse. Dr. Kelley comes back in and suggests that she walks a little bit and see if that helps things along. Loren and Reece come with. Leaving mom and Stephen in the room by themselves.

Stephen - “I’m hungry.  Loren usually has some kind of candy in her purse.” He rummages around and turns her phone on.

Goldie - “Get out of her purse. I’ll go get you a bag of chips but you have to finish them before Jessica gets back.”

Stephen - “Thanks mom.” She leaves and the door isn’t even closed when Loren phone rings. Thinking he’s doing her a favor he answers it. “Hello?”

Kevin - “Who’s this?”

Stephen - “Stephen.”

Kevin - “Hey man, Where’s Loren?”

Stephen - “Her and Reece are walking with Jessica.”

Kevin - “Oh well when are they getting back?”

Stephen - “Probably soon Jess’s not walking to well you know.”

Kevin - “Why what’s wrong?”

Stephen - “She’s having a baby duh?” Kevin sits down. And then does some quick thinking.

Kevin - “Oh that’s right. What hospital are you guys at?”

Stephen - “Cedars.”

Kevin - “Thanks.” He hangs up just as the girls walk in.

Stephen - “You know what Lor, I like Kevin and everything but some times he’s really rude.” She sees her phone in his hand.

Loren - “Oh god Stephen please tell me you didn’t answer my phone.”

Stephen - “Well it was ringing.”  Jessica turns so white she’s colorless.

Loren - “What did you tell him?” Stephen starts to get the hint that he messed up.

Stephen - “That you were walking with Jessica.”

Loren - “And?”

Stephen - “And she was having a baby.”

Loren - “And?”

Stephen - “And we were at Cedars.”

Me - “I have to get out of here.”  Goldie comes back in and sees Jessica trying to get her pants on.

Goldie - “What is going on?”

Me - “I got to get out of here.”  A pain shot through her again and she falls to her knees. Some one hits the nurse’s button.

Meanwhile Kevin is looking for Brian. He finds him going over his vows by the pool.

Brian - “Hey cous what’s up?”

Kevin - “A lot. Um, let’s sit down over there.” He gestures to a quite side of the pool.

Brian - “okay I’m intrigued.” He sits down.

Kevin - “okay. You doing okay?”

Brian - “Kevin just spill it.”

Kevin - “okay just don’t interrupt me okay. I was able to get a hold of Loren again. Except she didn’t answer her phone Stephen did.  She’s at the hospital with Jessica.”

Brian - “oh my god is she okay?”

Kevin - “well not exactly. She’s having a baby.” Brian sits there in a state of shock. After a few seconds.

Brian - “What hospital?”

Kevin - “Cedars.” Brian gets up and starts to walk fast with Kevin closely behind. By the time they hit the lobby they are both in a full run. Howie sees them and catches up at the curb where they are getting a taxi.

Howie - “Hey where are you two off to in such a hurry?”

Brian - “Jessica's having my baby.” He gets in the cab.

Kevin - “Don’t’ tell anyone I’ll call you when we get this all figured out.” He jumps in and leaves Howie standing on the corner stunned.
